A Caregiver Needs to Be Compassionate

Many of us will come in contact with the act of caregiving in one form or another.  As our former first lady, Rosalynn Carter is quoting as saying, “There are only four kinds of people in the world – those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers.”  At the MorningStar senior living communities, we seek individuals drawn to the idea of working with seniors to become part of our team of care managers.  

One of the most important attributes of successful caregivers in senior living is to be compassionate.  This is even more important than actual experience as it gives a care manager the ability to empathize with an elderly resident who may be suffering from chronic illnesses and/or other debilitating, health conditions.  An effective caregiver also needs patience as they need to understand that their job is to support the senior’s independence and not just take over a task.
