MorningStar’s New Mexico Communities are Building a Team of Servant-leaders

While a timeless concept, the term “servant leadership” was first introduced in an essay by Robert K. Greenleaf titled The Servant as Leader, and published in 1970.   In the essay Mr. Greenleaf explains, “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…”  In other words a servant-first leader’s priority is to serve other people’s needs rather than being someone who sees leadership as a way to attain material possessions.
