MorningStar’s Medication Care Managers Help Keep Our Residents Safe

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that adults 65 years and older are more than twice as likely as younger persons to end up in the emergency room due to an ADE (an adverse drug event).  They are also seven times more likely to be admitted to the hospital. The problem, according to a recent study from the National Institute of Health, stems from the fact that “40% of seniors aged 65 and older take five or more prescription medications, and 90% take at least one prescription.” Moreover it found as many as 55% of those seniors take their medications incorrectly.  

At our Colorado MorningStar of Mountain Shadows, MorningStar at Bear Creek, MorningStar of Fort Collins and MorningStar of Boulder senior living communities, seniors’ wellbeing and safety is our first priority.  This is why one of the services we offer is medication management.  Our medication care managers/QMAPs are responsible for dispensing medications to our residents and are meticulous when it comes to documentation.  

As a medication care manager, duties will include administering and documenting regularly prescribed medications per the Medication Administration Record along with observing the five rights for safe administering of medications and per physician orders.  You will also be responsible for ordering meds from the pharmacy when and as prescribed 7 days prior to running out of meds, and as requested by the Wellness Director, to ensure that residents always have medications available.
