While the concept is timeless, the phrase “servant leadership” was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in an essay that was first published in 1970 entitled The Servant as Leader.  In it he writes “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.”  Greenleaf continues by explaining that a servant-leader is vastly different from a person who is a leader first as their goal may include acquiring power or material possessions.  

Thus a servant-first individual is committed to seeing to it that other people’s needs are being served.  At the MorningStar senior living communities, we strive to do just that and feel it is our privilege - our calling to serve.
